As much as people are complaining about Altidore, I do believe that many are missing some important points. As of now his goal scoring ratio is practically identical to Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey, who are our number 1 and 2 goal scorers. Also, I he should find a good vein starting in the game against Nigeria, his playing indicates that he can terrorize any defense. For Clint Dempsey, as much as Klinsmann would like to be an out and out striker, I think he can provide more for the team as a central attacking midfielder or recessed striker. In that position he starts a bit deeper an thus provide and avenue for creative plays while at the same time he is advanced enough that he can easily become the man in the opponents 8 yard box and score goals as he tends to do. For the left winger, I prefer Bedoya to Davis. He brings a hard working and fearless steak to the team while still providing a good amount of creative building play. His stamina and speed allow to be quick on the attack and also a good cover for the defense should an attacking player such as Cristiano Ronaldo or Nani come charging down the flank. As right winger, I have great confidence in Mix Diskerud. He has great pace and can run at defenses and also has very good creativity to create passing plays with Dempsey, Bradley, and Altidore. Next, the two central midfielders should be side by side and they need to be Beckerman and Bradley. The two of them have a strong defensive game while at the same time are excellent and creative distributors. Also, Beckerman is prone to play of the back, so should Bradley decide to travel up the field and lend to the attack, Beckerman can shore up the defense. Beasley and Johnson are similar cases for opposite sides of the field. They both have great pace and stamina to keep up with even the fastest wingers while at the same time bring very good attacking options. Also, I prefer Beasley's experience over Chandler's exuberance. Geoff Cameron seems to have made a home for himself as a central midfielder and provides good solid structure at the back. The main reason I would choose Besler over Brooks is he seems to have better chemistry with Cameron. Tim Howard is by far the goalkeeper of choice for the United States. In the end, this formation provides more defense while still offering great attacking options. If anything I think this formation would be a good secondary formation for the squad should they find themselves in a situation where they are not able to dominate that midfield as much as they would like, as this is the main necessity of the Diamond formation, if it cannot control the midfield it does not work. Some notes, this squad can be modified with Graham Zusi for Diskerud, Aaron Johannson for Bedoya, Wondolowski for Altidore, and Jermaine Jones for Beckerman.
