Yanks to Face Guatemala Ahead of 2015 Gold Cup

The U.S. Soccer Federation announced a friendly today—a July 3rd match against Guatemala that will serve as a tune-up before the 2015 Gold Cup gets underway. The teams last played just ahead of the 2013 Gold Cup.

THE LAST TIME THE U.S. MEN'S NATIONAL TEAM played Guatemala, it was the final prep match before the 2013 Gold Cup. The Yanks dominated that contest, 6-0, and went on to win the tournament.

Hey—if it worked once before, why not try it again?

The Yanks will face Los Chapines on July 3 (6:30pm ET, Fox Sports 1, UniMas, Univision Deportes) at LP Field in Nashville, U.S. Soccer announced this afternoon. The Americans will be favorited to win Group A, which also features Panama, Haiti, and Honduras. Guatemala is in Group C with Mexico, Trinidad, and Cuba.

'We are thrilled to have the opportunity to play a team like Guatemala before the Gold Cup," U.S. national team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. "They are similar to our opponents in the group stage, so we couldn't ask for better preparation. Our goal is to win the tournament, and this will be an important first step. Nashville has always been a great home to the national team, and we look forward to having a fantastic crowd at LP Field."

The U.S. opens Gold Cup play against Honduras four days later at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. The final will take place at on July 26 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Guatemala is currently ranked 90th in the world, and hopefully will provide Klinsmann's men with a tougher challenge this time around. The last contest, played at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, was a lopsided affair.

Of course, the team was quite a bit different back then: Landon Donovan, Herculez Gomez, Stuart Holden, Jose Torres, DaMarcus Beasley, Jack McInerney, and Oguchi Onyewu were all on Klinsmann's roster. Don't expect to see any of those players this time around.

Are you OK with this matchup? Do you think the Yanks might need an ego-boost after playing on the road against the Netherlands and Germany? Share your take below.
