Toronto Triumphs; Zardes Scores; Eastern Promise

Toronto's season-saving, come-from-behind victory over Portland may have saved a few jobs and it certainly reminded soccer fans that Michael Bradley 1) plays in MLS and 2) has some game

WELCOME TO THE FIRST EDITION of The MLS 10, where we take a look at the 10 things (good, bad, or ugly) that stood out the most from the MLS weekend.

1. Holy Toronto!

Trailing the Timbers 2-0 in the 62nd minute on Saturday, Toronto FC’s playoff hopes were hanging by a thread with less than 30 minutes to play. But what looked like a sure defeat stunningly morphed into the most dramatic of victories, capped off by Michael Bradley’s 88th-minute free kick that evaded everyone on its way into the net, giving Toronto a precious three points in the ultra-tight Eastern Conference playoff race.

Valid question.

2. Eastern Conference Madness

Speaking of that playoff race, we now have five teams within six points with four games to go (and five games for Toronto and Houston). D.C. United is completely safe, while the New England Revolution and Sporting K.C. should be fine as well. Columbus, New York, Toronto, Philadelphia, and perhaps Houston will battle it out for the remaining two spots.

Don’t miss the several high-stakes Eastern Conference match-ups over the next month.

3. There's No Place Like Home

Yes, L.A. is tied with the Seattle Sounders in the Supporter's Shield race at the moment, but you have to like the Galaxy’s chances after the 4-0 blowout of the Red Bulls on Sunday night. L.A.’s holy trinity of Robbie Keane, Landon Donovan, and Gyasi Zardes were all on the score sheet, and as usual, there were some mighty fine goals scored. This wonder-chip from Keane was probably the pick of the bunch.

For Western Conference teams that visit the StubHub Center in the playoffs, the hope will not be to win, but rather to simply minimize the damage… After the four goals scored against New York on Sunday, that’s now a cool 16—sixteen!—goals for L.A. in its last four home games.

4. Zardes On Fire

The red-hot Galaxy forward continued his patch of form over the past few months, slotting impressively on the end of a nifty give and go from Donovan.

As Taylor Twellman repeatedly mentioned on the ESPN2 broadcast, it was the type of chance that Zardes often skied into the 20th row last year. This year, thanks to extended playing time and improved composure, it’s in the back of the net, again and again and again. That’s now 16 goals for the L.A. native, extending his homegrown player record and surely warranting a U.S. national team call-up soon enough.

In a recent Los Angeles Times interview, Donovan explained the reason for Zardes’s huge improvement from this season to last. “Every day this year, he's out there working on his finishing, and you're seeing it pay off,” Donovan said. “When he gets in front of the goal now, it's comfortable for him.”

5. LD Ties the MLS Assist Record

As the tweet says, "LegenD."

6. BWP Chases Goal Record

Bradley Wright-Phillips has been absolutely rampant this year, but he couldn’t find the net at Fortress StubHub Sunday night. Still, the Englishman sits just three goals away from tying the MLS goals record, currently held by Roy Lassiter and Chris Wondolowski with 27. To make his pursuit of the record even more exciting, each goal he adds before season’s end will inevitably be massive, with the Red Bulls hanging by a thread to the last playoff spot in the East.

7. Huge Vancouver Comeback

It wasn’t quite as insane as Toronto’s comeback, but the Vancouver Whitecaps delivered a vital comeback of their own over the weekend. Trailing 1-0 against Real Salt Lake in the second half, Vancouver roared back behind two goals from captain Pedro Morales. His clever redirection and ensuing shirt-off celebration are below.

8. Crew on the Board Early

Columbus picked up an important 2-0 win over Montreal on Saturday, with the tone set by a second-minute beauty from Ethan Finlay. Future U.S. national teamer Wil Trapp picked out a perfectly weighted through ball that Cesc Fabregas would have been proud of, and Finlay did the rest, slamming home from a tight angle.

There was no looking back from there, and Federico Higuain sealed the win with a second half penalty.

9. Dempsey and Martins Dazzle

Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins make for a pretty potent strike duo. Here, Dempsey finished after some nifty interplay between the two.

Martins added a pair of goals as well, giving him 15 on the season, which is a Sounders record. Get your popcorn ready for the two remaining regular season games between L.A. and Seattle, which will almost certainly decide the Shield winner.

10. Get Well Soon, Will Johnson

To add injury to the insult of blowing a 2-0 lead to Toronto in the second half, the Timbers lost captain Will Johnson for the season due to a gruesome broken leg early in the contest. Few players are as instrumental to their team’s success as Johnson is for Portland, and any slim chances that the Timbers had of making a deep playoff run now look even slimmer.
