5 to Watch This Weekend

Michael Bradley on TV; Cameron & Howard Battle

Is Geoff Cameron the right back to play right back for the U.S. national team? Can Michael Bradley re-establish a starting spot for one of the best team's Europe? Will there be a Brek Shea sighting?

SO MANY SOCCER MATCHES, so many channels, so little time. How does a American soccer supporter keep tabs on U.S. national team players and their clubs?

With this weekly column, of course. Here is Christopher McCollum's curated guide to your weekend soccer viewing.

Saturday

Everton vs. Stoke City
10 a.m. (all times Eastern)
NBC Sports Live Extra

Two of the best Americans currently playing abroad, Tim Howard and Geoff Cameron, square off Saturday morning. Stoke City has not been that great as a team, but Cameron has been on a remarkably strong streak of performances to help prop up his team—and bolster his chances of starting in the World Cup. Howard is second in the league in shutouts, while Romelu Lukaku and the Toffees' offense has been clicking. Cameron and company (including, dare we say it, Brek Shea?) will need quite a bit of luck to pull off a result, but that's why we watch, right?

Aston Villa vs. Sunderland
10 a.m. (all times Eastern)
NBC Sports Live Extra

In another American vs. American meeting, Brad Guzan and Jozy Altidore square off in what is sure to be one of the most underwhelming games of the weekend. Sunderland didn't score last week against Stoke, which means it needs to score against Aston Villa if it wants to maintain its 0.6 goals-per-game average. Altidore has been used as late-game sub in the last two outings as Gus Poyet tries to figure out how to jumpstart the Black Cats. Meanwhile, despite Aston Villa being Aston Villa and only grabbing five points from its last five games, Guzan is continuing to impress in goal, tied for third in the league with shutouts while facing the seventh most shots.

Guingamp vs. Nantes
2 p.m.
beIn Sport Max 3

Alejandro Bedoya continues to get solid playing time for a surprisingly good Nantes team, currently sitting in fifth place in Ligue 1. The team has been on a little bit of a slide in the past month, getting only seven points from five games. Newly promoted Guingamp, like Nantes, is off to an impressive start, sitting in eighth place and only four points back from Nantes.

Sunday

Atalanta vs. Roma
9:00 a.m.
beIn Sport

Roma has gone winless in its last three, and has dropped from the top of the Serie A standings. Sunday's match against mid-table Atalanta will provide a good opportunity to right the ship as well as a chance for Michael Bradley to see more playing time. Roma is still one of the few unbeaten teams in Europe—joining Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and PSG out of the major leagues—and a win will vault the team back into first, at least temporarily.

America vs. Tigres
6 p.m.
Univision

It's the second leg of the Apertura quarterfinals, and with the aggregate score even at 2-2, it's a winner-take-all scenario for Jose Francisco Torres and Tigres. America was by far the best team in Mexico this fall, while Tigres squeaked into the playoffs via goal differential. A Tigres victory against what amounts to the Mexican national team would be a massive upset. The winner will face either Santos Laguna or Queretaro in the semfinals.

NO U.S. ANGLE BUT...

England: Tottenham vs. Manchester United (7 a.m., Sunday, NBCSN)—Both teams have struggled at different times in the first third of the season, but you get the feeling that Manchester United is about to snap out of it and start making a run as the busy holiday season approaches. With 11 points from its last five games, United have overtaken Tottenham, who were embarrassed off the field last week against Manchester City. This game should be fun to watch—unless you're a Tottenham fan.
