Michael Bradley Now Back In AS Roma's Starting XI

In an otherwise quiet weekend for U.S. internationals in Europe, Michael Bradley, Sacha Kljestan, and Aron Johannsson continued to play key roles for their respective clubs.

AT FIRST GLANCE it would not appear to be the strongest weekend for American players in Europe. But looking deeper there were some impressive success stories to consider.

Aron Johannsson is now the leading scorer for the first-place team in the Eredivisie. Michael Bradley started for an AS Roma side that is one of the best teams in all of Europe. In England, Geoff Cameron and Brad Guzan demonstrated why they are integral parts of their Premier League teams.

In sorting through all of the action this weekend, here are the best performances.

5) Aron Johannsson
While Aron Johannsson did not score for AZ Aklmaar in its 2-0 win over ADO Den Haag, he was still dangerous. More importantly, he was part of a big result for AZ. With the win, AZ Alkmaar moved into sole possession of first place in the Eredivisie, one point ahead of second-place Vitesse.

This is very impressive given the turnover at AZ Alkmaar—during the offseason both Jozy Altidore and Dutch international Adam Maher transferred to bigger clubs. Despite losing its two most important players, AZ has reinvented itself in just a matter of months and Johannsson has played a major role as the team’s leading scorer.

4) Brad Guzan
Another game, another impressive outing for Guzan, who made four saves in a 0-0 draw with West Ham on Saturday. This year could be another relegation battle for Aston Villa and the team’s biggest weakness is by far a lack of offensive production. Through 10 games, Villa has only scored nine goals. Despite that paltry number, the club sits in 14th place largely because of Guzan and his clutch saves.

3) Sacha Kljestan
When Lucas Biglia left Anderlecht, it was a major loss and it probably crippled the club from contending for a third straight Belgian title. Sacha Kljestan, who had been partnered with Biglia in central midfield, has done his best to pick up the slack.

On Saturday, Anderlecht defeated OH Leuven and Kljestan notched his seventh goal in just 13 appearances. He is the sixth-leading scorer in the Belgian league, and given that he plays as a deeper lying midfielder, that is a very impressive statistic.

2) Geoff Cameron
At first glance, Stoke City’s 1-1 draw at home against Southampton is not a good result. Compounded by the fact that its only goal came from its goalkeeper on a 100-yard fluke clearance is also disappointing. That being said, Geoff Cameron put in a very solid game and was Stoke City’s best player in the game.

Playing his normal right back, Cameron was defensively very strong and he also moved smoothly into the attack. Right back may never be his best position but he is growing into the role nicely.

1) Michael Bradley
In his first start for AS Roma since his return from injury, Bradley did very well in a 1-1 draw with Torino. Yes, the big story is that Roma dropped their first points of the season following a perfect 10-game run to start the year. But that shouldn't detract from a solid outing from Bradley.

Playing in central midfield, Bradley completed 97 percent of his passes against Torino and was very involved—making 82 touches in his 90-minute performance. He wasn't dynamic in the game but he was instrumental in helping Roma maintain a dominant 64%-36% possession advantage on the road.

What is most important is that Bradley continued to show he is an important player on one of the best teams in the world. That's a big deal.
