It’s hard to pin an entire team’s success to one or two players, but the Seattle Reign is the hottest team in the NWSL right now, thanks in large part to Megan Rapinoe and Hope Solo.

The Reign picked up six points in four days with a 2-1 win over the Boston Breakers on Wednesday and 3-1 defeat of the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday. Solo made 13 saves in two games and Rapinoe scored her first goal in the National Women's Soccer League. Her tally, which came when she coolly fired past Chicago goalkeeper Erin McLeod, iced the game. Solo is keeping the ball out of the net on the one end and Rapinoe is instilling confidence and creating chances for herself and others, two huge components that Seattle had been missing this season. The Reign face the Breakers again on Wednesday but have an eight-day break afterwards, which could either allow the team to gel even more or break up their wave of momentum.

Carli Lloyd scored a hat trick in the Western New York Flash’s 4-0 win over the Washington Spirit who, thanks to Seattle’s hot streak, have fallen into last place.

Lloyd scored two minutes into the game with a powerful header off a cross from Alex Sahlen. She followed that up 20 minutes later when she poked Abby Wambach’s pass between goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris and the goalpost. Wambach assisted on Lloyd’s third goal as well, which Lloyd slipped under Harris and blasted into an open net. Lauren Cheney continued her dominant streak with two goals this week, the first in a 2-2 tie with Sky Blue FC and the second a golazo in a dominating 2-0 win over the Portland Thorns.

Cheney and KC jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Sky Blue on Wednesday, but Kelley O’Hara assisted on a Monica Ocampo goal on the way to a 2-2 draw.

Cheney scored a stunner in the 10th minute of FC Kansas City’s 2-0 win over the Portland Thorns on Sunday. On the run, Cheney unleashed a rocket that appeared to sail high, but dipped down at the last minute over a leaping Karina LeBlanc. The goal, Cheney’s eighth of the season, was the start of complete domination for Kansas City, who held Alex Morgan to only one shot.

Morgan has hit a bit of a dry patch lately. She hasn’t scored since June 6th and the cracks in the Thorns armor are starting to show through, especially with the absence of defensive midfielder Becky Edwards who tore her ACL last week and is done for the season. Tobin Heath will make her NWSL debut for the Thorns on July 14th and could provide a much-needed boost.

Sydney Leroux scored two goals in the Boston Breaker’s 3-2 win over Sky Blue FC. The win closed the gap for the fifth place Breakers, who are still in sniffing distance of the fourth place playoff spot.
