Jonathan Spector Joins U.S. Squad For Sept. Friendlies

The 29-year-old Birmingham City defender hasn't played for the United States since a February 2012 match against Italy, but he will join an injury-depleted defense as it prepares for Peru and Brazil.

U.S. MEN'S NATIONAL TEAM coach Jurgen Klinsmann made a late addition to his roster for the upcoming friendlies against Peru and Brazil, calling in Birmingham City defender Jonathan Spector.

Spector, 29, has been capped 34 times by the national team dating back to his debut against Jamaica on November 17, 2004. His best moment internationally came at the 2009 Confederations Cup when his strong performances helped the U.S. advance to the final.

Under Klinsmann, Spector has typically been called up when most first-choice players have been unavailable. Such is the case now, as fullbacks Timothy Chandler, DaMarcus Beasley, and Fabian Johnson are all injured.

Spector has featured in central defense for Birmingham City this season but throughout his career he has primarily been used as a fullback. While he prefers playing on the right side, he can also play on the left.

The Arlington Heights, Ill., native signed for Manchester United as a teenager and made his professional debut in a Champions League qualifier when he was 18. Spector soon after moved to West Ham United, which included a loan spell with Charlton Athletic.

The Blues are off to a strong start this season, securing eight points through its first four games. Though currently in seventh place, every team ahead of Birmingham City has played five games

Spector has played every minute of Birmingham City’s league games so far in 2015-16.
