AROUND THE HORN

  • Lynden Gooch has made good on his recent loan the English 5th division side Gateshead FC, going a full 90 in his debut on the weekend as part of a 1-0 loss to Bristol Rovers. On Wednesday, Gooch once again was in the XI, scoring the eventual game winner and assisting on another in a 3-1 win over Wrexham.

  • As we reported last week, talks are seemingly progressing for Serie A giant Juventus in its attempt to snag Sporting KC and U.S. under-20 defender Erik Palmer-Brown. The player’s agent was reportedly in Turin last week to hammer out the deal—which was widely circulated through the Italian soccer press. This week those rumors were given a little more credence when SKC President Robb Heineman commented that there is a “80% chance” Palmer-Brown will depart for Italy in a permanent move.

  • Under-20 attacker Amando Moreno continued his hot streak for Tijuana this week. Days after scoring his first professional goal, Moreno tallied once again for the Xolos as part of a 2-0 Copa MX win over Leones Negros on Tuesday night.

  • Staying in Mexico, here’s an interview with Club Tijuana youth forward Brandon Vasquez, who got the start for the under-17 national team in its 4-1 win over Guatemala last night. Vasquez talks about the possibility of featuring at this summer’s U17 World Cup.

    ACROSS THE ATLANTIC

  • On Wednesday Gedion Zelalem scored for the Gunners' U-18 squad in a 5-3 win over Leicester City. For more on Zelalem’s development, check out this interview with Arsenal CEO Ivan Gazidis, who discussed the high expectation that have already been placed on the 18-year-old.

Speaking of high expectations, with U-20 and senior team camps both scheduled on European soil later this month, it will be interesting to see if and where the youngster may pop up.

  • After a successful week with the Tottenham reserves, defender Cameron Carter-Vickers received the start for the Spurs' U-18 side, playing an impressive 90 minutes in the first leg of the FA Youth Cup semifinal on Thursday, a 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Vickers, who was featured on the cover of the match day program, received lots of attention for his performance. Coach Kieran McKenna singled out the defender: "The whole back four and the goalkeeper…did a really good defensive job, but you'd have to say Cameron Carter-Vickers stood head and shoulders above, as a defensive player he was outstanding."

CCV gave his thoughts in this post-match interview.

  • The rumors are circulating that Sebastian Lletget—stuck in purgatory with West Ham reserve squad—will depart London for MLS on a three-year deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy. His agent says, “Not so much.” We’ll be monitoring…

  • Finally back from a string of injuries, under-23 central defender Will Packwood started and played the full 90 minutes for Birmingham City U-21s in a 3-2 loss to Huddersfield U-21 on Monday. A week after scoring the game-winning goal in his return against Sheffield Wednesday, Packwood gave away the ball on a poor back pass that led to the go ahead goal. U.S. U-20 eligible forward Duane Holmes did not feature for Huddersfield.

    U-18 ROUNDUP

Kyle Scott went 76 minutes and captained the Chelsea U-18s last weekend in a 2-1 win over Tottenham.

  • U-18 defender Antonee Robinson went 90 minutes and provided the assist on the Toffees' lone goal in a 3-1 loss to Stoke City.

  • Also last weekend, Djair Parfitt-Williams returned to the score sheet, bagging the brace for West Ham's U-18 team as the Hammer’s smashed Reading 4-0.

    GERMAN UPDATES

  • On Sunday Junior Flores got the start and scored his fourth goal of the season across all competitions for Borussia Dortmund U-19 during a 3-2 win over Köln. Yes, there is video evidence of the blessed event (2:38 mark).

  • Mario Rodriguez made a second-half appearance for Borussia Munchengladbach II over the weekend, playing 45 minutes in 6-1 win over FC Hennef.

  • U.S. U-20 captain Russell Canouse made his return to Hoffenheim II on Saturday, getting the start and going the full 90 in a 4-1 loss to FC Nottingen.

  • Twenty-two-year-old U.S.-eligible forward Jann George is currently tearing up the Regionalliga Bayern for SpVgg Gruether Furth II. In his 18 appearances, George has tallied 14 goals for the club—where he made his 2.Bundesliga debut earlier this season.

  • If you have a second, check out this interview with under-20 eligible midfielder Ethan Sonis, who is currently playing for Freiburg’s U19 and reserve side.
