DEADLINE DAY brought about one significant move from an American point of view as DeAndre Yedlin moved from Tottenham to Sunderland on a season-long loan.

Yedlin, 22, moved to Tottenham from the Seattle Sounders in January following his eye-opening performances at the 2014 World Cup. He appeared in just one Premier League game last season.

He will join a Sunderland that needs plenty of help. After narrowly avoiding relegation the last two seasons, the club finds itself at the bottom of the table after four games. Its -4 goal differential is the worst in the Premier League and it has conceded a league-worst 10 goals.

Coached by Dick Advocaat, Sunderland now boasts two Americans on its roster. In addition to Yedlin, California teenager Lynden Gooch recently made his professional debut for Sunderland in a League Cup game. Last weekend he made the bench for the first time in Sunderland’s 2-2 draw against Aston Villa.

Yedlin is currently on the United States national team roster for the upcoming friendlies against Peru and Brazil. Despite hardly playing this calendar year for Tottenham, U.S. boss Jurgen Klinsmann has continued to call-up the speedy winger.

The Seattle native has made 23 appearances for the national team. Age eligible for the U.S. U-23 team, there is still the possibility that Yedlin might see time with that team for Olympic qualifying or at the Olympics next summer should the team earn a spot at the Rio de Janeiro games.

Sources told ASN that Yedlin is being considered for both the right back and wing positions at Sunderland. Despite playing as a right back his entire youth career, he began to shift to the wing position over the past year for both the national team and at Tottenham.
