ASN brings you the news about the United States' Group G foes as well as recaps from yesterday’s international friendlies.

Portugal vs. Cameroon

Portugal delivered a commanding 5-1 win over Cameroon, and, may I say, looked great doing it in their new World Cup home kits. Raul Meireles, Fabio Coentrao, and Edinho were all on the scoresheet in the victory, and an up-and-comer named Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as well. A few of Portugal’s goals were down to poor defending from Cameroon, but it was still an impressive display of the firepower at Portugal’s disposal.

Germany vs. Chile

Mesut Ozil did not look like a man out of form as he cleverly set up Mario Gotze’s well-taken winner in Germany’s narrow 1-0 triumph over Chile. The Chileans responded well to Gotze’s 16th minute goal and were probably the better side throughout. But the German defense—as well as the frame of the goal—held strong despite a series of chances for Chile. Germany was missing several key players, notably Marco Reus and Thomas Muller. Regardless, Joachim Low was still able to name a side that boasted the attacking qualities of Gotze, Ozil, Toni Kroos, and Miroslav Klose. Have fun on June 26th, U.S.

Ghana vs. Montenegro

Ghana slumped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat in Montenegro, conceding a first minute penalty and never recovering. Manager James Kwesi Appiah started with arguably his four best players on the bench, as Asamoah Gyan, Kwadwo Asamoah, Kevin Prince-Boateng, and Sulley Muntari all came on as second-half substitutes. Like the U.S., Ghana will still be disappointed with their result, missing stars or not.

Premier League

Germany’s Andre Schurrle had his signature performance in a Chelsea shirt in Saturday’s win at Fulham, scoring a clinical hat trick to lead the Blues to a 3-1 win. The speedy German has found himself behind Willian on Chelsea’s right wing depth chart recently, but that Schurrle (puns unavoidable) will change if he continues to deliver performances like this. Schurrle still faces an uphill battle to feature in Germany’s starting XI in Brazil. However, if he can continue this type of form, it will be hard for Joachim Low to ignore him, especially considering the 23 year-old has 11 goals in just 31 caps for Germany.

La Liga

Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a late equalizer in Real’s top of the table derby against Atletico Madrid. Per usual, the finish was lethal and left the opposing keeper absolutely no chance. Tim Howard and whoever joins you in the backline, buckle up.

Dutch Eredivisie

Ghana’s Christian Atsu continued his recent stellar run of form, delivering an assist in Vitesse’s comfortable 3-0 win over Roda JC. Atsu also stood out in Ghana’s loss to Montenegro yesterday, further strengthening his case for a starting role in the World Cup. Don’t be surprised if the Chelsea loanee plays a big role in Brazil, whether starting or off the bench.

Champions League (er, Asian Champions League)

Ghana star Asamoah Gyan is still scoring whenever he wants for Al-Ain. Go to the 2:05 mark to see his breakaway goal against Lekhwiya in the Asian Champions League. Even if the teams he’s been playing are about as good as my U9 AYSO team was, Gyan is still an extremely dangerous goal scorer. Keeping him quiet will be absolutely essential when the U.S. meets Ghana on June 16th.

Does Ghana’s poor performance give you increased confidence? Does Portugal’s huge win scare you at all? Let us know in the comments section.
