BERLIN—Julian Green will head to Hamburg SV on loan from Bayern Munich for the 2014-2015 season. The deal had been reported in the German media on Saturday but became official on Sunday.

The move will be an opportunity for Green, 19, to finally earn some playing time at the professional level. To date, he has made just one professional appearance—a five-minute cameo in a 2013 Champions League match for Bayern Munich.

The Tampa-born Green filed his one-time switch from German to represent the United States internationally and he was a surprise selection for the 2014 World Cup team. He made one appearance at the tournament against Belgium in the Round of 16, where he scored a memorable extra time-goal to help the Americans get within goal of a match it eventually lost 2-1.

HSV is a club that has struggled in recent years and has been enveloped in internal turmoil. In 2013-14, the club stumbled down the stretch with five straight losses to finish in 16th place in the Bundesliga. It only avoided relegation when it defeated Greuther Furth on away goals in a playoff.

Things haven't gone much better for the club to start the 2014-15 Bundesliga season. Through two games, HSV is without a win or a goal against two newly promoted teams. Last week it played Cologne to a scoreless draw to start the season and yesterday the team lost 3-0 to Paderborn at home.

Green's debut for HSV could come on September 14 when it visits Hannover.
