What if top players come to Major League Soccer for reasons other than financial appeal? A midfielder starts playing great for the domestic league's best team. U.S.-Mexico draws near.

  • There are many benefits to playing in Major League Soccer and monetary rewards are just a few of them. This is an excellent piece

  • Is the season Sacha Kljestan is having getting overlooked? In some circles, yes. But not here: "Naturally a deep-lying midfielder, Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch has tasked Kljestan with a more advanced role up the pitch, and it’s beginning to seem like a stroke of genius. Since July 11, the 30-year-old has tallied an impressive four goals to go along with seven assists over his last nine league matches. Now playing as a pseudo No. 10, the rough transition that characterized the early stages of 2015 now seems like a distant memory."

  • Red Bulls on top.

  • But would you put him into your Starting XI against Mexico?

  • A bunch of Americans played in Europe over the weekend. Here's a round-up.

  • Getting closer: Wisely, Klinsmann implemented a defensive formation against technically superior Brazil. Unwisely, he stuck attack-minded Alejandro Bedoya in a deep midfield role. Embarrassingly, Klinsmann replaced Bedoya before halftime. The tactical misstep did not decide the outcome – Brazil could’ve won by five goals – but it did rekindle questions about Klinsmann’s decision-making. If personnel falls into place in the coming weeks, Klinsmann will weigh a more aggressive and proven formation: 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2. In either one, Jones and Michael Bradley would form the midfield backbone.

  • Where in the world is Preki?

  • I'll be honest here: I really like the MLS Plays of the Week, which usually show some serious skill. But this week's are, um, underwhelming.
