ASN Morning Read: Clint Dempsey Returns

It's the most wonderful time of the year. Well, almost. European club soccer nears its complete restart, while MLS continues to impress. And there's a special transfer of the Dempsey variety.

  • Clint Dempsey has returned to America and is here to stay. It's an impressive coup for MLS and the Seattle Sounders, so while we all rub our eyes to make sure we're not dreaming, here are some thoughts on the move. (But also, maybe the league is playing fast and loose with the rules?)

  • Goal's Alex Labidou writes about the possibility that Landon Donovan might go abroad once his contract ends with the Galaxy. "Factor in that he will likely want a contract similar to Dempsey's at the Sounders and contemplated retirement just last year, and the Galaxy may be reluctant to give Donovan a lucrative long-term commitment. And that could force Donovan's exit."

  • The Galaxy beat Juventus! And then you remember it's just a friendly.

  • Eric Lichaj helped new club Nottingham Forest to a shutout victory to start its Championship campaign.

  • Tim Howard and Everton lost, 2-1 to Real Madrid in Los Angeles last night, ending the team's run in the International Champions Cup. The squad will return to England. Howard went the whole 90, and British journos blamed the referee for the friendly defeat, so there are some positives.

  • Soccer-related or otherwise, photoshoots always seem pretty boring. Fear not Stoke City, Maurice Edu can change that.
