  • We enjoyed the following hot takes about Don Garber v Jurgen Klinsmann:
    1) MLS, Garber threatened by Klinsmann challenging America's status quo
    2) Complicated reality of Don Garber's response to Jurgen Klinsmann
    3) Klinsmann-Garber Spat Highlights Failings of Both

  • Not to be outdone, Klinsmann himself took to the mic (read: Reuters) to talk: "It’s great to see that we have debates and public discussions like this because that shows that more and more people care about soccer in this country. In Europe, in South America and in Mexico we’re all used to this. It’s part of people’s everyday lives – to have debates about different opinions. It’s just starting now in the United States and I think it’s pretty cool." We're not taking sides here but that is just about the best backhanded compliment ever.

  • Baby steps:
  • A really excellent piece about the plight of Lindsey Horan: "Of the 20 players on the United States roster for the 2015 World Cup regional qualifying tournament that began Wednesday, all 20 played or are playing college soccer, and none currently play abroad. A few, like Megan Rapinoe, have played in Europe, but generally only after at least establishing themselves in the United States. Horan, 20, would not be a lock to make the World Cup team even if she were living in the United States—not while the team still has scorers like Abby Wambach, Alex Morgan, and Sydney Leroux—but Jill Ellis, the coach of the women’s national team, acknowledged in a recent interview that an on-the-cusp player like Horan would probably be at a disadvantage if she played abroad because of the nature of the women’s national team.
