ASN Morning Read: Onward to the Quarterfinals
The United States national team defeats Costa Rica in East Hartford and will play El Salvador in the next round of the Gold Cup. Elsewhere, Jonathan Spector is hurt and Sebastian Lletget shines.
Why hello there. What were you doing Tuesday night? ASN was at the American victory, bringing you the latest breaking news. And that news? Two words: Love fest. “It’s a great atmosphere in the group now,” midfielder Mix Diskerud said. “Coming into the locker room now everybody is happy and smiling and supporting each other. People have their lucky socks and their lucky boxers, and I think it’s all just working for everybody.” Awwwwwwwww, you guys!
But let's talk business. And by business, we mean player ratings. Jose Torres is your ASN Man of the Match with a 7.5. From the keyboard of Jon Arnold: "This was the best match Torres has played for the national team. He did excellent work early tracking back to help Beasley and also combined with a few guys going forward. The Tigres player also showed why Jurgen Klinsmann has him hitting set pieces with an excellent 57th-minute free kick and a few more good efforts from dead balls."
What's that? You'd like to make your own ratings? Why go right ahead. And how about a Starting XI for the El Salvador match while you're in the mood.
Game highlights? Sure, we have those, too, although maybe use that term "highlight" loosely.
Sebastian Lletget is tearing it up in preseason for West Ham. The press is calling his performance against Colchester United a "virtuoso display." Lletget himself thinks this could be the year. "I definitely feel like my first-team opportunities are within arm's length, or even closer than that. I'm feeling confident and physically ready. We'll see where the season takes me, but hopefully it's going to be one to remember," he said.
Jonathan Spector's long string of bad luck continues as he suffered a fractured cheekbone 10 seconds from time and may need surgery. Depending on which paragraph of the Sky Sports article you read, he will either definitely or possibly miss the start of the Championship season.
