ASN Morning Read: Moving On? Moving Up?

Is it time for the United States national team striker to bid adieu to you and you and you at Sunderland? Perhaps, perhaps it is indeed. But hey, the Gold Cup is just around the corner and we have places and dates.

  • This headline pretty much says it all: Altidore's Sunderland effort is laudable but maybe he should move on. But here's more: "Jozy Altidore is nothing if not a conspicuous trier. When chances break to him, he couldn't look more interested -- too interested, almost. His eagerness to apply an overdue finish comes with apparently overwhelming knowledge of the misses that precede it, however much he might claim otherwise."

  • Here lies a long piece about Alexi Lalas' move to Fox Sports: "Fox Sports will soon officially announce that it has signed Lalas to be a major part of its soccer programming. Lalas said he will be working on Fox’s World Cup coverage, which includes the 2015 Women’s World Cup and 2018 Men's World Cup, its upcoming MLS package and a number of other soccer properties, including the Champions League, FA Cup and possibly the German Bundesliga [Fox has the U.S. rights starting in 2015-16). Fox Sports management has not yet told Lalas whether he will work in the studio or as a game analyst, but his experience at his previous employer, ESPN, suggests he will mostly be in the studio."

  • Let's go to the reaction tweets:

  • Lalas, on European teams coming to the United States: “Make no mistake. This is a gold rush. This is a land grab.”

  • Tim Howard gets caught in the fact checking morass:

  • "For the first time in 11 years, the Women’s World Cup is coming to network television. Fox Sports confirmed on Tuesday that it will air 16 matches live on over-the-air Fox next June and July, the most World Cup matches (men or women) ever airing on an over-the-air network. Those matches include one WWC semifinal on either June 30 or July 1, the third-place game on July 4 and the final at BC Place in Vancouver on July 5.

  • "The dates for Gold Cup matches scheduled for each group stage city were also announced, as well as the seeded nations which will head up each group: the United States (Group A), Costa Rica (Group B), and Mexico (Group C). Seeded teams were determined based on current FIFA rankings. The United States will kick off the 2015 Gold Cup in Dallas’ Toyota Stadium on July 7, before moving on with the rest of Group A to Boston (Gillette Stadium, July 10) and Kansas City (Sporting Park, July 13).
