ASN Morning Read: Let's Bid on World Cup 2026

Would you like to host the 2026 World Cup? Here's how. (Sorry, Europe.) Major League Soccer goes to St. Louis? And a United States forward gets hurt again and could miss another big tournament.

  • It's here. Sort of. At least the rules for securing the 2026 World Cup are, maybe, coming into focus: "A 2026 World Cup hosting contest that could include the United States and exclude Europe will take shape next week when FIFA agrees on campaign rules. FIFA said Tuesday that its executive committee will approve bidding regulations at a two-day meeting starting Monday. The executive committee could block European bids from a contest set to feature CONCACAF neighbors Canada, Mexico and the U.S." The is also known as the "eff you, Platini" rule.

  • More than you ever wanted to know about the Women's World Cup television schedule.

  • Don Garber went to St. Louis to talk MLS expansion. There are many pretty pictures of the proposed statdium. There's also this:
  • Alfredo Morales completes a long journey to the Bundesliga: "What happened with Alfredo was, two or three years ago, he was in and out at Hertha Berlin," U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said as he reflected on Morales’ progression prior to the friendly against Switzerland. "They said he was their biggest talent, from talking to the coach at the club at that time. But, for whatever reason, it didn't click. He was in. He was out. He got frustrated. And then, suddenly, he made the decision to go to Ingolstadt. I thought, 'Woah, why is he making a step back? We want him to make a step up into the Bundesliga starting lineup every week.' I spoke to him and he said, 'Coach, I don't feel I'm getting further right now. I’d rather make a step back to make two forward.' I said, 'Fair enough, we'll be there, we'll watch.'" It sounds like he'll get a contract extension for his efforts.

  • Down goes Altidore. The forward will miss four to five weeks with a hamstring injury. It's not the one he injured in Brazil, which is good, but it puts his fitness for the Gold Cup in quesiton, which is bad.
