  • Edgar Castillo suffered a triple fracture in his face on Saturday, but somehow still managed to stay on the field for the match’s final 72 minutes. He underwent surgery and Tijuana says he’ll be out for 10 days and reevaluated in two weeks. This timetable makes it doubtful he’ll be able to participate in this month’s qualifiers although some Omar Gonzalez-style headgear might allow him to cut some time off that recovery. If nothing else, Castillo gets major brownie points for playing through a broken face.

  • In other injury news, Jay DeMerit had surgery on his torn Achilles, which generally takes more than four months to recover from. “The thing with Jay is that Jay’s a bit of a freak athlete,” Whitecaps manager Martin Rennie said. “He’s one of those guys who always tests really well, always recovers really well. “ DeMerit suffered the injury just six minutes into Saturday’s season opener.

Fiancée Ashleigh McIvor tweeted a photo of him after the surgery:

  • Houston hosts Santos Laguna in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals tonight. Herculez Gomez scored two goals for Santos in Friday’s league match and will look to carry his form into continental competition.

  • A recent study using data from the 2006 World Cup shows that your risk of having a heart attack is doubled while you’re watching a soccer game. Just think what happened during the last minutes of the U.S.-Algeria match.

  • The 2014 World Cup will offer special seats for obese fans. All you have to do is get a doctor’s note that your BMI is 30 or more. It’s the “first time tickets for obese people are offered at a FIFA event." Racism and corruption take a back seat to this stuff.
