ASN Morning Read: Everton Finally Falls in 2013

Tim Howard (Mr. Red Card) and the gang lose at home for the first time in the 2013-2014 season. Whoops. At least it was Jozy Altidore's Sunderland that got the win. And more from a Boxing Day to forget.

  • Tim Howard picked up a red card setting up a Sunderland penalty kick in Everton’s 1-0 loss, the club’s first home loss in 2013. It’s hard to tell how much—if any—contact Howard made, but you’re going to get called for that 99 percent of the time. It was his first Premier League red card and his first since 2002 when he was with the MetroStars. Jozy Altidore came on in the 87th minute as Sunderland picked up its third win of the season. The Black Cats are still in last place.

Elsewhere, Brad Guzan and Aston Villa lost 1-0 to Crystal Palace and Geoff Cameron and nine-man Stoke City were destroyed 5-1 by Newcastle. The Americans were beat up on Boxing Day.

  • Fulham’s YouTube channel has a sit-down interview with Clint Dempsey who talks about his return. It's just about as insightful as you would expect.
  • Sporting Kansas City’s Oriol Rosell, a Barcelona product, was recently called up to the Catalonia national team for a friendly and was asked about MLS. On if it’s easy to play in the league, Rosell said “hardly” and questioned whether all La Liga players were capable of doing so. He also thinks his club could hang in some of Europe’s top leagues.
