ASN Morning Read: All Hail King Claudio

The once-upon-a-time American captain and all around good guy takes over the reigns of the newest United States soccer powerhouse; the future of Stoke City is here; we laugh, we cry, we love Clint Dempsey.

  • Former United States men's national team star Claudio Reyna is the new director of football for NYCFC. (NYC FC?) “With the large soccer fanbase in New York, the city is desperate for a team. I think it is very clear than NYC deserves a team and needs a team,” Reyna said. “We will make sure that we represent the city correctly. It is truly an honor to be the first employee of New York City FC.”

  • Elsewhere, Don Garber is talking about the rivalry between NYCFC and the New York Red Bulls. It's a good thing, he promises. "We're going to have a good thing going on: Two teams trying to be the king of the New York region. That's a good thing for soccer. It will make everyone work harder," el Commish said.

  • Were you wondering how Tony Pulis' removal at Stoke City was going to alter the path of Geoff Cameron, Maurice Edu, and Brek Shea? So was Steve Davis. "It’s hard to see how this will be good for one of them (Cameron). It could go either way for another one (Shea). And it can only be good for the third (Edu), for whom things went pear-shaped pretty much from the moment he arrived at the Britannia," the NBC maestro writes.

  • U.S. Soccer writes a strange little love letter to Clint Dempsey, which we suppose is their job and all: "Dempsey’s hot boots during the past 12 months have also been of supreme importance to the U.S. National Team. 2012 saw Dempsey score a career-high six international goals in just nine games, with five of his scores coming in 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. His 12 career goals in World Cup Qualifiers are tied with Landon Donovan for first all-time in U.S. Soccer history."

  • Stuart Holden and Conor Doyle land new contracts while Eric Lichaj looks like he's going to land somewhere other than Aston Villa next season.
