TABLE TALK

A 3-2 win over conference rivals Real Salt Lake on Friday keeps the Seattle Sounders on top of the Western Conference as well as the Supporter's Shield standings (to go along with its U.S. Open Cup championship). The second-place Los Angeles Galaxy no doubt feel that Wednesday’s 2-2 tie against Montreal and Sunday’s 1-1 draw in the California Classico were points squandered. Real Salt Lake remains third in the Western Conference.

  • A 1-0 win over D.C. United on Wednesday, followed by a 1-1 draw against the Chicago Fire on Saturday helped the New York Red Bulls leap over both the Columbus Crew and the Philadelphia Union into fourth place.

  • D.C. United maintained the top spot in the Eastern Conference despite the loss to New York.

  • Wins for Sporting Kansas City and the New England Revolution kept them in second and third respectively. FC Dallas stayed fourth after defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1.

    LOOKING AHEAD

Major League Soccer schedule makers deserve props for arranging the season-ending home-and-away series between the two best teams in the Western Conference. On October 19, Bruce Arena's Los Angeles Galaxy squad host the Seattle Sounders at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. Six days later the same two teams will end their regular season campaigns at Century Link Field in Seattle.

Right now the Sounders are three points up on the Galaxy with a game in hand, but there's a strong chance that the conference title will be decided over these two matches. Should be great stuff.

    GOOD FORM, BAD FORM

  • The New England Revolution is currently the league’s in-form side, with the club’s unbeaten streak now at six games. Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Montreal was the team’s third straight come-from-behind win, which demonstrates that it has a winning spirit even if the defense is still a bit leaky.

  • The Galaxy are riding a seven-game unbeaten streak even if its last two results, ties, feel more like wasted opportunities.

  • Chivas USA are moving in the opposite direction, having failed to win any of its last 10 games. Sunday’s visit to similarly struggling Toronto FC might be just what Chivas needs to stop the downward spiral. The side is undefeated against Canadian clubs this season, scoring five and conceding only two.

  • The Colorado Rapids’ 2-2 draw against the Portland Timbers snapped the team’s seven-game losing streak. After the contest, first-year coach Pablo Mastroeni said that he hopes the team can take the same grit into Friday’s trip to RSL.

    League Leaders

  • Dom Dwyer moved one goal closer to Bradley Wright-Phillips’ league-leading 21 in the MLS Golden Boot race. Dwyer scored the opener in Sporting KC’s 4-0 victory over Chivas USA on Friday. The tally moved the 24-year-old’s total to 19 and made him the club’s all-time, single-season record holder. The club record was previously set by Preki back in 1996.

  • Wright-Phillips had to come off at halftime of Wednesday’s 1-0 win over D.C. United because of hamstring tightness. He then missed Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Philadelphia.

  • Landon Donovan leads the assist race with 15. With his career total at 132, Donovan is now three assists from tying Steve Ralston as the league’s all-time assist leader, and has six games to reach this landmark. He was suspended for the California Classico, so his four-game assist streak will be on the line when the Galaxy host Dallas this Saturday.

  • Galaxy teammate Robbie Keane and Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri follow with 13 assists, and New York’s Thierry Henry has 12.
  • This game week also saw a milestone for Henry, who scored his 50th MLS goal on Sunday.

    ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

Dallas’ Tesho Akindele and the Chicago Fire’s Harry Shipp continue to duke it out for this year’s Rookie of the Year honors. This week Akindele added an assist to his season total of three; he also has seven goals. Shipp has five assists and six goals. They all count, but we're not sure how much Akindele knew about this assist to set up Blas Perez.
