THE GERMAN CUP ROUND OF 16 played out this week and it proved to be an epic two days of action for American players. Quite frankly, it was one of the best times in recent history for Americans abroad, as every player raised his game and left a mark on the prestigious tournament.

When all was said and done, six Yanks participated, producing two goals and three assists. The one player who was not involved in a goal, John Brooks, actually had the best overall performance. Here's a quick recap. 

Wood’s goal helps sink Cologne

On Tuesday Bobby Wood got on the scoresheet with a superb 76th-minute run through the Cologne defense and a classy finish to give Hamburg a 2-0 lead over Cologne. The goal was his seventh of the season in all competitions.

As a result, Hamburg will host Borussia Monchengladbach in the quarterfinals.

Johnson’s assist Ignites Gladbach

In the 12th minute of Borussia Monchengladbach’s visit to Greuther Furth, Fabian Johnson set up Oscar Wendt to open the scoring.

Monchengladbach ended up advancing with a 2-0 win and Johnson played 68 minutes in the midfield. Next up it the club face Bobby Wood and Hamburg SV in the quarterfinal round.

Wooten scores in loss to Schalke

Andrew Wooten, 27, has been on quite a roll for 2.Bundesliga club Sandhausen. On Wednesday he scored yet again although Sandhausen fell to Schalke 4-1. Wooten now has 11 goals and four assists in all competitions this season.

Chandler’s assist lifts Eintracht

Timothy Chandler is enjoying the best season of his career and his play is one of the reasons why Eintracht Frankfurt is in third place in the Bundesliga and fighting for a Champions League spot.

On Wednesday Eintracht was trailing Hannover in the 62nd minute when Chandler’s cross set up Taleb Tawatha’s equalizer. Eintracht would eventually win the game 2-1 and advance to the quarterfinal round, where it will host Arminia Bielefeld later in the month.

Pulisic notches equalizing assist

Christian Pulisic began the game on the bench but with Dortmund trailing Hertha Berlin 1-0 at halftime, head coach Thomas Tuchel brought the Pennsylvania native into the game. Two minutes later, he assisted Marco Reus on the equalizing goal.

It was not perfect for Pulisic, however, as he missed his penalty in a shootout. Still, Dortmund ended up winning on penalties to advance and will next face   3.Liga upstarts Sportfreunde Lotte in the quarterfinals.

Brooks strong in shootout loss 

The best American player in the remarkable past two days was John Brooks who was not on the scoresheet and whose team did not advance.

Brooks, 24, was a big reason why Hertha played Borussia Dortmund so strongly. He anchored a backline that did very well to limit Dortmund to just one goal over 120 minutes. Over the past 18 months he has blossomed into one of the better central defenders in Germany and despite the loss it was the type of performances that he has been prodcuing on a fairly consistent basis.
