Weston wins it for Schalke in Moscow!

Weston McKennie won the game for Schalke with an 88th minute header to give his team a 1-0 win and three valuable Champions League points. People will see the goal over and over but McKennie was solid over the course of 90 minutes.

After playing Porto to a draw in its UEFA Champions League Group D opener, Schalke needed a win against Lokomotiv Moscow in the Russian capital on Wednesday to avoid falling towards the bottom of its group.

Weston McKennie, 20, assisted in the 1-1 draw against Porto and got the start against Lokomotiv. The American played a solid game throughout where he won tackles and helped make his imprint in the middle of the field. It was the exact type of performance that Schalke wants to see from the young American. The game lacked flow but good teams can find ways to win pretty and win ugly. They are both just as effective.

Overall, he had a team-high 84 touches in the game and completed over 72% of his passes. Defensively he had six interceptions and a clearance.

All of that is positive. But with the game scoreless in the 88th minute, the Texan found a winner when he headed home a Yevheniy Konoplyanka corner kick to give Schalke three massive points in its goal of advancing to the knockout stages in 2019.
