RBNY stunner in Tijuana. Robles, Corona, and Ream stand tall & more

Thanks to remarkable performances from Tim Parker, Bradley Wright-Phillips, and especially Luis Robles Red Bulls escaped Tijuana with a stunning 2-0 win over Xolos in the first leg of its Champions League. Joe Corona hit a goalazo for the ages and Tim Ream keeps winning. Meanwhile, Miami and Columbus are nightmares for MLS.

THE WEEK HAS ALREADY reached its midway point and there has been plenty of news from abroad and domestic as well as on and off the field to break down.

The 2018 CONCACAF Champions League saw two of its best stories so far come from Americans in Luis Robles and Joe Corona. Meanwhile, it was more of the usual as the MLS to Miami movement is in rough shape and the #SAVETHECREW movement is ugly.

Red Bulls earn historic result

It is rare for an MLS team to win in Mexico in the CONCACACAF Champions League. It’s even rarer for an MLS team to defeat a Liga MX away by multiple goals. The Red Bulls have yet to even play a league game in 2018 and are clearly in preseason form, but rolled into Tijuana and walked out with a 2-0 win.

So many things went right for the Red Bulls. Bradley Wright=Phillips scored two clinical goals. Tyler Adams covered a ton of ground in the midfield to disrupt Tijuana. Newcomer Tim Parker was a huge addition to the central defense.

But the real story was Luis Robles who turned in one of the best performances you will see from a goalkeeper. He was phenomenal.

It’s a rare situation, New York survived the away leg. Can they protect the lead at home in New Jersey?

Corona’s goalazo

Club America beat FC Tauro 4-0 in the first leg of its CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal against FC Tauro at Estadio Azteca.

San Diego’s Joe Corona, 27, stole the show with the goal of the tournament so far. Check it out.

Ream and Carter-Vickers post wins

There was a full slate of games in the Championship on Tuesday. The best story went to Tim Ream and Fulham who defeated Sheffield United to extend its unbeaten run to 14 games in the league. Out of a possible 42 points, Fulham has accumulated 36 points in that span. It is now in the hunt for an automatic promotional spot – trailing Cardiff City by five points.

Ream, 30, is one of the most in-form American players in 2018. Not only is he starting for Fulham, he has been one of the team’s best players.

Meanwhile, Cameron Carter-Vickers went the distance for Ipswich in a 2-1 away win over Sheffield Wednesday. He’s done well there but it will be interesting what happens to the English-born American after his loan expires after the season.

Miami stadium is murky

Don Garber recently unveiled Miami as an expansion team but It turns out that the team’s stadium situation is not as clear as thought.

As the Miami Herald reported, there is considerable opposition at the Overtown neighborhood and the team is now looking at acquiring a local golf course.

Question of the day: who will get a stadium first? New York City or Miami?

Ohio sues Precourt to save the Crew

In what is the biggest nightmare for MLS, the Ohio Attorney General is suing the Columbus Crew ownership in a bid to keep the team in Columbus. Precourt responded and this entire situation is going to be a cloud over the 2018 season.
