HAPPY THURSDAY MORNING to all ASN readers. We have trophies to talk about as well as an American playing a role in a huge Champions League upset. It is always fun when trophies are on the line.
Let’s start in Ohio.
St. Louis wins Open Cup
St. Louis CITY Won its first trophy in team history on Wednesday night when it defeated the Columbus crew in a shootout to claim the 2026 U.S. Open Cup title. The game was scoreless for 120 minutes, but Columbus had the better of chances and dictated the pace of the game.
The most dramatic part of the game was in the 78th minute when St. Louis lost its goalkeeper Roman Bürki to a head injury. His replacement, Ben Lundt, became the hero in the shootout when he saved Santiago Rodríguez’s opening attempt. St. Louis, meanwhile, did not miss, with New Jersey’s own Daniel Edelman delivering the winner.

The win was a surprising result given that St. Louis was playing on the road and was without its best player, forward Rafael Navarro, who was “cup-tied” out of the competition after playing for Colorado in the earlier rounds.
With the title, St. Louis has qualified for the 2027 CONCACAF Champions Cup
Montreal upset by Forge
North of the border, Canada’s domestic cup competition saw a historic upset when Forge FC of the Canadian Premier League defeated CF Montreal in a shootout after a 1-1 draw.
It was the first team from Canada’s Premier League to win the title.

Montreal’s starting lineup featured two American players in defenders Jalen Neal and Brandon Craig who both played well but were part of the otherwise embarrassing defeat.
Adeniran assists in historic LASK win
American forward Sam Adeniran has been working his way back from surgery to repair a facial bone. He scored over the weekend for LASK in a 4-0 win over Austria Lustenau but was on the bench to begin Wednesday Champions League game away against Sporting CP in Portugal.
But shortly after subbing into the game in the 65th minute, Adeniran took a pass from Yvan Dibango in the middle fo the field and sent a well hit ball to Krystof Danek who move in on goal and scored the game winner of a historic 3-2 win. It was a remarkable upset and the first ever win for LASK in the Champions League.

Adeniran’s injury in September halted his momentum in what has been a remarkable year for the Houston native. He was instrumental down the stretch of last season to help LASK win both the Austrian Cup and the Austrian Bundesliga. He then looked like a dominant forward in the league to start the 2026/27 season. His two-goal performance against Celtic in the Champions League playoff sent LASK into the sport’s most prestigious club competition.
