McKennie diagnosed with MCL injury; out six weeks

Weston McKennie is out until March after Schalke announced his diagnosis on Monday night. The injury will keep the Texan out of action for six weeks. While a setback, it is far better than the feared alternative of an ACL injury which would have kept him out until at least the beginning of the 2018/19 season.

On Monday Schalke announced that American midfielder Weston McKennie would miss an estimated six weeks due to a knee injury which he suffered in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Hannover.

McKennie, 19, entered Sunday’s game in the 63rd minute but exited in the 83rd minute after sustaining the injury in a collision. Following the game he was on crutches but told the media he did not believe the injury was serious.

Evaluations were conducted on Monday night and the results indicated a partial tear of his medial collateral ligament which would require roughly six weeks away from the game which would be in early March. The result is a setback but it is far more favorable than an ACL tear which could have sidelined him through the next preseason and into the 2018/19 season.
