TAB RAMOS TODAY unveiled his roster for the U-20 World Cup which begins May 20 in South Korea. The roster features many of the players who made history by winning the CONCACAF championship in March—albeit with a few significant changes.
For starters, Josh Sargent has been pulled from the United States U-17 team and will be join the U-20s in Asia. While the U-20 team won CONCACAF, it struggled with goal scoring and Sargent could provide a boos. That said, it will be interesting see how he adjusts to the new age level on short notice.
Gedion Zelalem will be back for his second tenure with the U-20s after starting for the 2015 team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Cup in New Zealand. Likewise, Cameron Carter-Vickers will be back with the team after a standout 2015 performance. Worth noting: the English-born Carter-Vickers has been dealing with an injury in recent weeks.
This team features three players who are also elgible for the 2019 torunament: Sargent, Tyler Adams, and Brady Scott.
While several top players were not included on this team—including Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie—the U.S. will be expected to perform well, in large part because the Yanks were drawn into a manageable group: Ecuador, Senegal, and Saudi Arabia.
"We are very excited to once again provide a great competitive opportunity to our players and are looking forward to heading to Korea Republic," Ramos said. "As always there were some extremely tough decisions to make. This is a talented age group."
