  • With Tottenham firing manager Andre Villas-Boas yesterday, Sunil Gulati is assuring everyone that Jurgen Klinsmann’s contract extension will keep him with the U.S. “We're not oblivious to the fact Jurgen's success has attracted interest from outside the U.S.,” Gulati said. "Therefore there were pragmatic market considerations in offering him a new long-term contract.”

  • Stuart Holden made a cameo in the Bolton locker room in the Bolton locker room at halftime of the team’s3-2 loss to Wigan on Sunday and then watched the second half from the stands. “It’s great to have Stu back around the place,” manager Dougie Freedman said. “I know he’s still a long, long way away but to have him back adds to the spirit.” Being the guy he is, Holden was kind enough to take a few pictures with fans in the stands… But seriously, they couldn’t get him a seat in a box or something?

  • In the draw for the Champions League knockout stage, Jermaine Jones and Schalke get to go head-to-head with Real Madrid. In the Europa League, Brad Friedel and Tottenham face off with FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine), while Aron Johannsson and AZ Alkmaar drew FC Slovan Liberec (Czech Republic).

  • Despite choking in the playoffs (again) Peyton Manning was named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year. Grant Wahl stated his case for Bob Bradley and Robbie Rogers for having “inspiring us with their courage and grace when others would have withdrawn in fear.”

  • Speaking of Bradley, King Fut does an excellent post-mortem on his time in Egypt: “The reception that my wife and I received from the Egyptian people has been incredible. We’ve made great friends, from all walks of life. People that will also stay with us for the rest of our lives. The positive feeling we have from the players and from the Egyptian people, completely outweighs the negative stuff you had to deal with.” Sportsman of the year, indeed.
