  • Unfounded transfer speculation! Newcastle United is said to be interested in taking Clint Dempsey on a loan deal, joining Everton, Fulham, and Aston Villa as those reportedly interested. Tottenham has first crack, but with Spurs’ depth it’s hard to imagine they’d need him.

  • Brian Straus previews the World Cup draw and how just about every group could be a “Group of Death.” You know this by now. Even if someone is fortunate enough to draw Switzerland or Colombia from Pot 1, there’s a good chance you’ll get another top-tier UEFA team from Pot 4. Yay for using the rankings from the month that Switzerland just happened to jump into the top eight! (cc: FIFA and Mr. Blatter) Play around with this handy draw simulator if you want to cry.

  • Though most of an AP panel disagrees, former France boss Raymond Domenech thinks the U.S. will reach the quarterfinals at the World Cup. "I've always found them to be well organized at the World Cup. Their matches are generally tight,” Domenech said. “I would have liked them to beat the Italians in 2006, that would have helped me out." Yes, that would have been nice.

  • In the latest ASN podcast, Noah Davis and Jon Arnold talk about the friendlies, who helped himself, who hurt himself and who’s just treading water.

  • Croatia’s Josip Simunic was fined all of $4,400 by public prosecutors for the pro-Nazi chants he shouted after the World Cup playoff. FIFA is reportedly going to do something too.
