ASN Morning Read: Clint Dempsey Misses Out Again

Dempsey's loan to Fulham looking worse and worse; Geoff Cameron looking better and better; and a Palm Beach Post report on David Beckham's MLS franchise is taken to task.

  • In eyebrow-raising news, Clint Dempsey was once again left out of the Fulham gameday roster in a 3-2 loss against Liverpool on Wednesday. While Dempsey’s absence over the weekend could be explained by his 120-minute FA Cup shift just days earlier, there is no documented reason why the Texan did not feature yesterday. Except, maybe form. Sigi Schmid doesn’t care, though. Also peculiar: the match was his last appearance at Craven Cottage before returning to MLS, depriving Dempsey a proper send off in front of the Fulham faithful.

  • Geoff Cameron got the start and went 90 minutes for Stoke City in 1-1 draw with Swansea City on Wednesday. Looking like a World Cup starter for Jurgen Klinsmann, Cameron led the Potters stout backline with 5 tackles, 6 interceptions, 6 clearances, 2 blocked shots and 0 fouls. Bubble wrap. STAT!

  • Elsewhere: Jozy Altidore and Tim Howard had their respective matches postponed due to weather while Fabian Johnson once again did not see the field for Hoffenheim in a 3-2 German Cup loss to Wolfsburg.

  • It looks like "Miami Vice" won’t be the name of David Beckham’s MLS Miami franchise after all. Beckham’s publicist, Simon Oliviera, took to Twitter last night, lambasting the Palm Beach Post report as “hogwash." In case you missed it, here’s the proposed design. Yup, that’s pretty Miami all right. All that’s missing is the white linen blazer with three-quarter sleeves.

  • Mentioned yesterday in the Morning Read, former under-20 midfielder Benji Joya is already proving to be a solid off-season acquisition for Chicago Fire. Joya was back on the pitch for the Men in Red on Tuesday where he scored the game’s only goal, an stunner, in a 1-0 win over DC United. Check it out.

  • Quick injury update: Nottingham Forrest manager Steve Davies says defender Eric Lichaj may be eligible to return to action in as little as 7-10 days (~5:00 of the video). At this rate, Jurgen Klinsmann might actually be able to assemble a healthy backline against Ukraine.
