ASN Morning Read: Clint Dempsey Back to England?

The United States attacker is considering heading across the pond over the winter but former club Fulham may not want him. Or they might. It's all a little confusing, honestly.

  • Rumors have floated around about Clint Dempsey heading back to the Premier League on loan in January, but Fulham boss Martin Jol wasn’t too forthcoming about that. Said Jol: "It's unbelievable speculation, which is nice. I never talk about players, especially when they are not here." We’re not going to bother trying to interpret what’s so “nice” about “unbelievable speculation.”

  • Brek Shea wants to get playing time away from Stoke City on loan, but Mark Hughes isn’t keen on that. "My priority isn't to get Brek into the U.S. World Cup squad. My priority is to get him ready to play Premier League games here, and we are working on that every day,” Hughes said. "If we feel an opportunity presents itself, and it would be good for Brek to go out and play games, then we'll look at it. But up to this point we haven't seen anything that we think will help.” This is pretty much how we all expected it would go when Shea moved back in January.

  • As if we needed any more proof, Brian Straus takes a look at how the proposed 40-team World Cup exposes FIFA’s political, money-driven reality. Though a seemingly sarcastic suggestion, a 64-team, March Madness style tournament sounds highly entertaining.

  • The shortlist for the Ballon d'Or is out and there are exactly zero Americans on it. Not that we should be surprised. Six men from Bayern Munich made it, however.

  • You will take three minutes out of your day to watch Sepp Blatter talk Messi vs. Ronaldo. The difference, in his opinion, seems to come down to the fact that one has a higher bill at the hairdresser. Also: "I like both of them, but I prefer Messi."
