With the World Cup now over for him, United States national team forward Aron Johannsson is set to have ankle surgery ahead of his upcoming season with AZ Aklmaar.

Sources confirmed the news to ASN on Thursday but added it was not yet known how much time, if any, the Alabama-born striker would miss. It is also unclear whether the surgery was planned before the World Cup or if Johannsson suffered an injury while with the American team in Brazil. His only minutes at the World Cup came in the opening game against Ghana when he replaced an injured Jozy Altidore after 22 minutes in a 2-1 win.

Following a breakout season in 2013/14 where he scored 26 goals in all competitions, Johannsson signed a multi-year extension with AZ Alkmaar who will be coached by Marco van Basten, former coach of the Dutch national team and one of the top European forwards of the past 30 years.
