The U.S. just isn't that good yet. Backline looks great for first time in forever. Depth is lacking. Argentina and 2nd Colombia game didn't have best lineup due to injury and cards. Sure used to get some feisty wins but the team plateaued under previous coaches. It just takes time and U.S. players still wasting time in college. In general, big picture wise, I think the program is headed in the right direction. Klinsy has good big picture ideas and has made progress on several fronts. That being said, I don't think he's the right choice to be coach of the USMNT. He should stay the big picture "technical director" person to help guide the entire program. But we need to hire a more tactically minded coach to guide the team through individual games and tournaments. — Mark

In an ideal world JK would be a technical director that recruits and we'd have a tactically focused and results oriented coach. It isn't and we are stuck with JK thru 2018 so there is no point in whining about it. Not to mention that much of the inconsistency of JK's reign can be blamed on no reliable CB pairing emerging until this year and the promised switch from a reactive to proactive style. "WHAAAAT," I hear you saying, "none of what JK has done can be called proactive." I disagree. We rely little on defending and countering. With consistency we attempt to play out of the back on the ground then feed the wings or interchange through the middle. We do it to such a degree even a team like Costa Rica which is built to bunker and counter decided to high press us instead. The reason our offensive and defensive stats have dropped is simply because we aren't great at building out of the back and attacking a set D yet. We don't have great vision, not all players know how to make proactive runs consistently, our touch and passing is second rate, and our ball security in traffic is second rate. That means we aren't consistent in breaking down lesser foes that bunker and we have trouble holding onto the ball against better teams that know how to press effectively. You could argue that means we should still be bunkering and countering but that isn't what JK was hired to do. I'd argue we've seen flashes of it working and that is progress in the right direction imo. If a few more players can emerge that raise our talent level and if we get a couch that is less focused on the big picture after 2018 I could see things jelling nicely in the near future. — wandmdave

I would be more to the right but I'm waining a bit. I want to see him get these younger cats involved somehow. Nagbe to Polisic could be a consistent headline if he does. I would also like to see zalalem get a chance soon. These are my only concerns. Klinsman has done a nice job creating a creative team. The flow and formations are more sound than ever before. If klinsmann can get some quality out of these young we might make it to the round of 16 in two years... which i would say would be stellar if we had young bloods playing. — Corbin

Agree w/ a lot of other comments in this corner. Klinsmann has done a great job taking us to the next level and has secured a lot of talent for the US. Not sure we will find a better coach out there right now who will maintain the momentum for youth development, but speaking to that he does need to let the younger guys play. My biggest pet peeve is picking guys like Wondo and Beckerman who WILL NOT be in Russia. To me, it's always about the World Cup and we need to start preparing these kids for it. — Evan

love that he has increased the player pool and brought us up against top international teams but he keeps on calling in mediocre veterans when a equal new blood is available with upside. TIRED of his tactical bs game calling. YET he gets into a pissing match with Donovan and leaves him off the WC roster for a younger player for future growth? Like the fact that Klinsman finds players all over the world and Caps them, like the fact that Klinsman plays guys "out of position," like the fact that Klinsman encourages guys to play in Europe instead of MLS. As far as players go, I think he gave Wondo, Altodore,Chandler and Orozco too many chances; I think he he didn't give Morris and Donovan enough chances. Don't know enough about Nagbe to say if Bradley should be starting or not. As for as Klinsman's supposed obligation to come up with an American style of play, I think you have to design the system around the players and not the other way around. For me, Klinsman is appropriately pragmatic. I like possession-oriented soccer with passes on the ground to moving feet -- and USMNT has done that at times. I also like hard tacklers like Jones and guys with enough speed and stamina to run the opponent into the ground,like Yedlin. If we had multiple guys good enough to be earning seven figure salaries in Europe (as do Argentina, Brazil, Germany, etc.) then I would expect the USMNT to win more games. Given the market value of our current roster, I would say the USMNT is exceeding expectations.Let him coach the 2018 WC team if they qualify and fire him if they do not. — Chris Larkby

Making progress. We can finally compete with teams like Colombia and Ecuador in big games. Yes we lost to Colombia but we played just as well as they did. Finishing is a bit of a problem but our defense is great. We have a good youth pool of talent coming through and hopefully with MLS academies improving Jurgen has more to work with. — Christian

The Positives: -Klinsmann said we would make the semi-finals and we did. -Bobby Wood is the new US forward that we needed. -We won 3 straight games in a competition for the first time. The Negatives: -The Argentina game: (The worst US lost in modern times. No shots on goal) Klinsmann had the opportunity to really be proactive in the game against Argentina and use the young players instead of Wondo & Beckerman. The improvement in one generation of players is marked. We won't improve further until we develop the kind of training academies that Europe's professional leagues have. JK has set the US up for success in the future by revamping the youth setup and bringing attention to important areas; US Soccer will benefit from these changes for years to come. That said, he doesn't know what he's doing tactically. Watching the USMNT has become painful. Some fans blame the players, but I don't think it's a player problem. Sure, we're not going to win a WC with our current player pool, but constantly putting players in roles they're not used to playing only sets them up for failure. — JackCaz

It seems sometimes that JK does not really believe the USA is up to the top levels. That is a big difference. From the World Cup comment that USA would NOT win that year, to some recent lineup choices. That may go some to explain the hesitance in the loss to Argentina. In the second half against Argentina, it seemed he was playing simply to limit the damage. We need a coach who will tell HIMSELF AND his team that they can win competition against 'better' sides.
